This post is a little delayed.
We pulled a crew together late Friday afternoon and decided to make the run out to Boomvang. Left Freeport at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning to good ole' GOM chop. Put the baits in in the water about a mile from sunrise and began to troll that area, after a short time we decided to head toward Tequila. There were a few boats at Tequila fishing, most I believe were fishing the tournament that was going on. Also at the rig was a crew boat doing work, so we decided to give him room and head out to Hilltops. We finally hit some flying fish around the Hilltops and caught a 20lb bull dolphin. Put the baits back in and caught a wahoo about the same weight. After that the action slowed to a hault until we showed up at a vacant BV and caught 2 wahoo in two passes by the rig. Then all of the sudden the water began to go nuts with schools of ballyhoo coming out of the water everywhere. So we decided to soak a few live'ies (live baits if you dont get the spelling). Meanwhile we threw a few tuna poppers off the bow. (all this is happening right about sunset) We were hooking up on BF every cast then a 40 lb Yf went air borne hitting one of the poppers and we pulled the hooks after a few minutes. The rest of the night we jigged, chunked, poppers, and other tricks but no more luck on the YF. We did manage to catch a ton of SOLID BF, so it wasn't a total loss. The weather picked up a little in the middle of the night so we decided to put in and start fishing Hilltops again in the morning. About 7:30 that morning we had a white about 75 lbs hit the left long and did a little jump and we pulled the hooks.
And that was the last bite we had all day. The water temperature on Hilltops on Sunday was 83.8 Degrees with a solid current. This was much cooler the Tequila and BV.
The craziest thing about the whole weekend is there was no Company at the spar rigs. The weather was not bad, so I am guessing everyone got off work Friday and fished the tourny. |

Thanks for the report.
It blows my theroy out of the water though, I was thinking the boat traffic Friday night had put the yellowfin down. The one YFT we caught was shortly after sunset and the two other bites that felt like possible Yellowfin were early. |

It will depend on your fuel burn. You could always use a bladder also. _________________ F/V AMBUSH

| We are probably one of the smaller boats you will see out there...We have a 25ft Ranger with twin Suzuki 4 strokes. I have a fuel capacity of 200 gallons and carry and extra 45 gallons. We only make those runs when the weather is good and seas under 2 ft. My advice is if you are going to make that run slowly test the waters, and be pretty confident on your fuel burn. The last thing you want to do is get caught 100 miles offshore in a small boat. |
