I have some friends that do this in Louisiana and I was just curious if you guys do any tuna hunting? They use a bouy and no tanks. They go down around 60 or 70 feet by the floaters or at the lump and hang loose till something comes by. That has got to be a trip. I have never seen any boats doing this off Texas.

Hey Capt. Dan,
I have some good friends that do this. Usually around the Midnight Lump. One of our good friends is talking about coming down in May and do exactly this. Need to have a very good bouy system, along with reliable guns. The blue water bungees are made for exactly this type of hunting.
Wouldn't it be a hoot to shoot a large yellowfin like this?

I think I'm set up now to give it a go, but it'd be good to see it done first hand before sticking one of those torpedos.

Hopefully we can get a trip set up soon, John. Our mutual friend is looking at a job in this area right now. And Michelle is ready to try it, too.

Great! A lot of it will depend on if Michelle goes to Cayman for the Advanced Freediving Clinic. Or, I can just go spearfishing without her! Very Happy

Sucky thing is most people can go on weekends, and Friday - Sunday is my busiest time.

But, I will try to get it rolling.

Do you have any underwater cameras? I just realized that would be a GOOD thing to have lol. I can find the fish and get some cats to film on the boat but I am not sure how filming underwater would work with that. I know bubbles are a no no and I would think you would almost need a fellow hunter to bring the camera down.....

I have a nice camera but would rather hunt so I hardly ever take my camera. I promise to take the camera more in the future.

That's what I'm talking about! Missed an opportunity two weeks ago. A friend found a weedbed size of a football field loaded with wahoo.
We have our breakaway systems set up and are ready to go. Let me do some checking on a video setup.

Three years I've been dreaming of that. I'd leave work and head out on my jetski to see that.

Hey guys,
New to this forum but not to spearing. I have been tossing around this idea for a while. I am having a big custom gun made just for this and think that I would like to give this a shot. If anyone wants to dive or shoot give me a shout anytime but my big gun won't be ready for another month. Great forum and I am glad to be here!

Hi Nathan,
We will give you a shout. We have been doing more and more freediving. We've shot a lot of grey snapper in the 10#-12# range, and two ling. One over 35#, and one over 45#. Michelle shot some really nice snapper over the summer.
With the weather starting to get into the Fall pattern, this may be something we have to do later.
I know the Midnight Lump turns on around Jan-Feb, but does anyone know when the tuna are here? For freediving? Jake has been seeing a lot of blackfin 70 miles out.
